The Buck Stops Here

Friday, August 29th, 2008

A person reported in the news sacrifices and gives up $3 million in an offering plate, and on the other hand the church gets excited about hoarding it. Here’s a news story of a person anonymously putting a lottery ticket in the offering plate of a (here we go now. . .) strugggglllliing church. Ooooh! doesn’t it just make you shiver! Man, this church was busting out the seams and now they can afford a new building. yippeee! God is glorified. When our building cup runneth over, God just goes all out and gets us a new building cup.

If your cup is full? Duh! Just get a bigger cup. We don’t need to plant more churches. Duh! Just make ours bigger. That’s the problem with us Christians. When our church is packed out, we think the size of the building is to blame. When a cup overflows, the size of the cup is not at fault. The fault is those who don’t pour it out when its full.

Our first reaction when we are full is to get a bigger cup instead of pouring ourselves out into a completely different cup that’s empty. There are desperate and empty parts of town that need a church, but we don’t want to pour ourselves into that area, because we just want to get bigger. Our first reaction is “let’s just expand ourselves “IN” here”, instead of “let’s just spread OUT there”.

Before you get onto me about the big deal of getting a new building, let me explain something to you. What was all the hype about in that news video? The truth is that the excitement was generated from what they were going to “build” with that money. You didn’t hear anything about needs being met, or bodies or souls being fed with that money. Because. . . well. . . duh. . . that would just be boring. Who would just give away that money and not use it on themselves? Giving away money is boring. Using it on ourselves, now, that’s exciting! Apparently, the person who gave the lottery ticket away in the first place felt that it was important to distribute the wealth. Unfortunately the Church doesn’t think it’s important to distribute. The church is truly where the buck stops.

The deception our church leadership has is that we take this money in the offering plate every Sunday and invest it into facilities and programs and call it a distribution. We don’t recognize that we are just spending it on ourselves. For instance, if me and my wife saved money for some long term goals, and rarely and barely gave to others; we would be considered selfish. But if a church does this very same thing under the cloak of “God’s will”, then they do not fall under the same accusation. But why not?

God’s Word does not provide instructions on how to fund an organization. It does however show us how to help those in need. We are the only thing left on this earth that resembles Jesus Christ. Jesus left us a legacy from his works and actions. He didn’t leave us a building, or a worship center, or a youth center. On the other hand, we’ve done a good job of leaving all the things that Jesus didn’t leave. Unfortunately, we have not done a good job of leaving Jesus. Where does the buck stop with you?

The Backlash Against Tithing

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

tithing backlashI’ve heard through the grapevine that this news article was coming out in the Wall Street Journal, and have been long awaiting it. Finally here it is. You can visit the link here. This news article titled, “The Backlash Against Tithing” was written in the Wall Street Journal by Suzanne Sataline.

As i was reading the news article i have a mixed emotion. I am really glad that the awareness is getting spread about the truth of tithing, but at the same time, i felt like it didn’t speak a clear and concise message about why tithing is not right. It spoke about people’s feelings and personal situations that they have gone through because of the misuse of the tithe. People’s feelings and mistreatment are not great biblical support for truth. I’m not saying that they don’t speak the truth, they just aren’t stating solid, biblical fact about it.

The main benefit of that article is that it increased awareness. It’s still up to the those of us who know the details of the truth to share it. A majority of this website is dedicated to sharing the detailed truth of tithing. Probably the greatest tool that i can share on this website is a long list of top arguments used for tithing and my rebuttal to them. The link is here: Tithing arguments
It is in a bullet list, so i list the main argument first and then state the rebuttal with supporting verses.

The next biggest resource and link is available here: Top Questions to Ask Tithers . It is just a list of 12 questions that are excellent to stump those who believe in tithing. After presenting these questions the tither will more than likely tell you that you’re robbing God, a heretic, or a devil helper. They will think of anything to say back to you except solid biblical truths that can answer these questions.

P.S. I give credit to Dr. Russell Earl Kelly for pouring his time and energy into providing information that made it possible for the Wall Street Journal to publish this news article. You can see his work on his website, www.shouldthechurchteachtithing.com/

Are Mega-Preachers Scandal-Prone?

Friday, September 28th, 2007

“Time” news just published this article, “Are Mega-Preachers Scandal-Prone?“, By David Van Biema. This article stems off of the recent events that had been occurring between Juanita Bynum and Thomas Weeks III. In my opinion many of these televangelists are the largest scam going on in the United States and around the world. It’s a good and bad thing that our constitution makes religion an untouchable.

What i’m saying is that these professional scam artists are not as pressured by the general public as other organizations are that are not religious. Our laws protect these people, and the media doesn’t attack them as much as they would a secular organization. Christians have to start standing up to these people. Here’s some practical steps that we can take to straighten out the mess that has been created by these evangelists.

1. Write about them
2. Promote others who write about them
3. Warn your relatives and friends about these people
4. Don’t buy their materials
5. Pray

If you have any suggestions that you would like to share about how we can change the mess that’s been created by these people, then please share it in the comments section

Rich pastors not common, but not endangered

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Associated Baptist Press – Matt Kennedy
Rich pastors not common, but not endangered species

What a life to live. The luxurious lifestyle of being a pastor! Rich pastors will never be endangered. They will always exist. Why? I don’t know? Why do you think? Is it ok that some pastors are walking around with expensive watches, and suits? If one’s earned it, don’t you think that it’s okay for them to keep what they’ve earned? Why should everyone bash on TD Jakes, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar? I mean, God’s given that to them, hasn’t he? They have a right to choose to keep that which God has given them. Why should we make them feel guilty about taking so much, when we’ve taken so much in our own lives. Of course not as much as them in the amount, but proportionately, we have. At least i feel that i have.

I wish sometimes that there was no such thing as “things”. i wish it was just all dirt to me. What if they look at that stuff as dirt? Do you think that some of those pastors that live in mansions could actually be right? Do you think there’s anyone that can be justified for what they’ve got? Do you think it’s okay for any Christian to live in any mansion? How much do you think is the right amount for all pastors to make?

This article does talk about tithing. but it mainly is referring to pastor Rick Warren of saddleback church. He lives off of a reverse tithe. That means he lives off of 10% of what he makes and gives 90%. You’ve gotta hand it to the guy for doing this. Do you think Rick Warren is challenging other rich pastors by giving a reverse tithe? I would think Rick Warren would have more authority in finances just because he’s shown that he’s handled the grip of money so well. On the other hand when other rich pastors are preaching tithing, it’s hard to listen.
