Sister in Christ,
I hope i sound clear when i say this. Whenever the government steps in to take care of social responsibilities, i blame the Church for allowing this to happen. I don't necessarily blame the government, although it would be nice if they understood the necessity to put more pressure on church's to start doing their job. It's embarrassing that the government has to step in. I want people to continue blaming the Church, and putting pressure on us. Thanks for your comments, and your support.

You stated that: It was the Church’s responsibility to take care of the poor, sick, widows, lame, and orphans. Instead, we are sitting back on our butts and letting the government take care of it. We need to wake up!

I agree 100%, however I do not feel that because the church is asleep behind the wheel, people should continue to suffer and do without. That is socially irresponsible. God places leaders in position to affect change and I beleive that Obama is such a leader.

I have just read two of your blogs and I have found them both to be very insightful. As a recent college graduate with a new job, I have long struggled with the concept of tithing in the modern church. First, because it seems a very legalistic way to give to a God that asks usk to give cheerfully. Also, because as a Spirit filled Christian, I have been disapointed with the fiscal integrity of many Charismatic churches and ministries. I think that your approach is Biblical and balanced. Thanks for your insight.

Keri,
I admitted that i missed it already. I'm sorry that donald miller's style of writing does not influence me like they influence you. Everybody's different.

Since i have 'missed it', would like to enlighten me on the concepts that you think i had missed. i would like to hear what you have to say.

Karin,
Our giving is under grace in the new testament. we are no longer under any obligation to give a tenth. As a matter of fact, in the old testament only farmers and herders tithed. everyone else with other jobs did not tithe. Give what you can.

It grieves me that so many (most) churches REQUIRE tithing to become a member and to be accepted into the local church. I know of a number of churches in my area that require believers to sign a card vowing to tithe...such coercion! Giving of any amount that doesn't cheerfully come from the heart is not pleasing in the eyes of God

Glenn,
you misunderstand the issue at hand here. No one is bothered that people are giving 10% of their income. Just like no one is bothered that people are still being circumcised. The problem is the enforcement of tithing on people. As long as tithing is enforced on people, then i will fight back against it.

I am not standing up for my cause. This is the word of God i'm standing up for. You said it yourself, 'we are no longer under the law of tithing' and yet you have no backbone to stand up against those who rob widow's houses. Maybe that's not a cause worthy enough to stand up for. I don't know, why don't you see the response of Jesus in Matthew 23.

As a Pastor that loves Gods Church I feel it is so sad when Christians fight over an issue that should unite us not divide. Giving is a form of worship to God, who can forget the words of Jesus about the old widow with a couple of pennies.

It is very simple and this is what we teach our church:

1/ Be a cheerful giver with a good heart.
2/ Tithing is a God given pricipal that we can choose to use in our giving but we are no longer under the law of tithing.
3/ Know way in the NT does it say tithing is wrong.

I would say to both camps on this issue please don't teach or make out the NT teaches Yes or No on tithing, instead show the maturity we should all show to one another that if one chooses to tithe thats OK, if one chooses not to, then make sure your giving is still from the heart.

Maybe...it's as simple as God's people live in a world where unemployment has risen. The unemployed can't give...even if they believe they should.
