Building God’s Kingdom 1 Brick at a Time

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Here’s an article from the news herald of a church in Panama City that built a 21 million dollar facility to hold their congregation for sunday’s. Here are some quotes from the article and from the video, which is below.

“The reason we built the new facility was basically out of need,”

I had a recent email come to me that basically criticized me for my critical attitude towards church buildings. Basically, they said he can see the problems church building pose, but the same argument can be used for personal homes and other so-called private property as well.

Well, i couldn’t agree more. The problem is that if I improve or expand my home, it is scrutinized as something selfish, but if i do that for a church building, then it’s Godly. My house and a church both have the same reasoning. For instance i could use these reasonings here for either a church building or my home:   i need a roof over my head . . . my children need to be comfortable . . . God needs to be glorified in it’s beauty . . . It is a light in a dark area . . . strangers are welcome here . . . i train my children here . . . etc. . . and so on . . . and so on.

Can you start to see the moral dilemma we’ve gotten ourselves into? On one hand these reasons are Godly, on the other these reasons are humanistic? Which is it?

“The construction and renovation has cost the church $21 million total, with funding coming from church members’ tithing”

Ah, Yes! The old tithing trick. Figure out something that i want to do; convince them it’s from God; and then naturally, they are required to fund my endeavors. There’s nothing like providing God’s people without a choice. I mean who can actually prove that this building is what God wants? Would you withhold your tithe and risk getting cursed, and becoming destitute because you were not sure about tithing towards the new building?

Get on the ball people, that’s why freewill, spirit-led giving should be responsible to fund supposed spirit led missions. This is so some nut case doesn’t come along and do something crazy call it spirit led, and then obligate scared tithers into paying for it.

“The easiest thing for us to have done would have been for us to move out of downtown Panama City and purchase property and just start over,” Conner said. “But we stayed down here because we feel like we have a very vital ministry to the downtown area.”

Hey knuckleheads, why not do the easy thing, and move out and still minister down town. No, you probably didn’t do that because it would be TOO HARD for you!

For those who balk at the hefty price tag, Conner said the church is fulfilling its goal as creating a pulpit to spread the Christian word.

ROFL – LOL! They haven’t created a new pulpit. It’s still the same pastor. the same staff. They didn’t even plant a new Church. My goodness, as long as i am spreading the Christian word, then the ends justify the means? I mean where’s the line? Does anyone ever think of planting a new church fellowship anymore? Should we not think about price as long as the pulpit is still there?

“Our primary responsibility as a church is not to feed the hungry,” Conner said. “We have a very, very active benevolence ministry … that opens feeds people, that clothes people. But our priority is the preaching of the gospel.”

You need money to feed people, you don’t need money to preach the gospel. The gospel is free, food is not. Maybe that will help put things in perspective. Let’s get back to building God’s kingdom 1 brick soul at a time.

Oh yeah, in case you are wondering the news article states that it took 408,000 bricks to build, if only they represented souls.

Should Church Financial Budgets be Public?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009
  1. Do you believe that it’s wrong for churches not to publicly display how all the tithes and offerings were allocated throughout the year?
  2. Is there any scriptures in God’s word that supports your reasoning?
  3. Why do you think some churches do not show how the money was used?

Subversive1 Blog Post

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Came across a great blog post today/tonight (it’s 1:30am). Check it out here: Subversive1. Here’s a little excerpt to give you an idea of what it mentions. Other than this, you’ll have to go to the link to read the rest. I’m right on board with what he’s talking about. Oh yeah, as a heads up, make sure you read the whole post before you come to any conclusions.

We’ve earned the right to collect as many hundreds of thousands of dollars as we like in the name of Jesus and it should be totally up to us how we spend that money. Especially if it’s for our OWN NEEDS, WANTS AND DESIRES.

Just because we’re not really involved in the needs of the poor around us, the Church SHOULDN’T BE PUNISHED IN THIS WAY.

Have Debt? Start Tithing

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Oh yes, another example of someone getting out of debt by tithing. Read the story here “CBN.com“.  I have to be careful here, because i do believe God honors faith, as well as sacrificial giving, which means that i believe giving 10% isn’t the only way to receive blessing. According to the story, apparently, a couple has paid of $125,000 worth of debt since they started tithing. I do not doubt that God’s blessing is upon them, i just wish people do not think that tithing is the magical bullet for their lives.

For every tithing success story, you could probably find  an equal story where an individual is tithing and getting in even more debt then before. In my tithing testimony you will read that my own family suffered the consequences of debt, and legalistic tithing. People don’t understand that God blesses the sacrifice not the animal. So it isn’t because this couple reached the 10% benchmark, that God decided to finally bless them. It’s the sacrifice that they made that God blessed.

I’m not preaching another form of the health/wealth gospel here. God’s word says he blesses faith. I couldn’t tell you the form that your blessing will come in, or even if it is now or in eternity, but God does reward faith, not that personal gain is why you should give.

Many more have gotten out of debt, through practical stewardship principles rather than waiting for the windows of heaven to open up. Typically, money doesn’t fall from the sky. Usually, financial planning is the key to financial success. There are no tricks to being wealthy, or even financially stable. There is only planning, and implementing.

If you don’t know how to divide or multiply by 10, or if you do not know how to move 2 decimal places to the left, then this tithe iphone app is for you.

I wonder if they’ll come out with an iphone app that helps you calculate your offerings as well.

Tithing: A Catch 22

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Under a tithing system, a pimps financial security is not dependent upon freewill givers guided by spiritual discernment. For this fact alone, tithing in the Spirit led Church incubates heretical teaching.

The law has no authority to command support for a ministry that the law did not commission. If the Spirit is calling a ministry, then let the Holy Spirit validate His work by also calling others to give. Otherwise you will get those who say they are led by the Spirit, but truly are misled, and yet still feel the need to obligate others into supporting him.

So now we have the problem that a man claims the Spirit is calling his fellowship in one direction, and then on the other hand God’s people are obligated to pay for a humanistic decision. It’s a catch-22. You disagree with a pastor and yet, you are obligated to fund his operation. What do you do? On top of that, throw in the often mis-interpreted phrase, “touch not God’s anointed”, and there you have it, no accountability, no questioning, lots of money, and all consuming power all rested in the finger tips of one man with a vision(whatever that may be).

So what’s going to stop this train wreck? We know one thing for sure, lack of money isn’t stopping it as long as God’s people know they are obligated to tithe.

Church rethinks its role

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

The quotes i am about to write in this blog almost don’t sound real. The original news article is found at PressTelegram.com. You can see for yourself how the Church is way off track with what our mission is suppose to be. For those of you who don’t want to read the article, the basic premises is that a church is in a lot of debt, and they don’t have a lot of money to pay for it. So they are contemplating turning their facility into a community center so they can attract more revenue in order to keep their doors open. So let’s start blowing your mind. Here are the quotes from this article.

Mind boggling statement #1

I’ve perceived a real need for a center in the community” . . .

. . .  “We’ve seen the facility as a real potential asset for the community as a whole”

Mind boggling statement #2

“The answer may be found in what other communities nationwide have called “adaptive reuse” of churches that have opened their doors to community purposes in order to survive.”

Mind Boggling statement #3

“I am of the opinion that some of the ideas that have worked across the country in adaptive reuse could work here if there is a proper process in educating the community and allowing the community to participate.”

Why does it all of a sudden become a necessity to be involved in community, when you face extinction? How messed up have we been if now we realize that we should start being an asset to the community around us? Since when did we realize that our doors need to be opened to community? And finally, since when did we realize that educating and allowing the community to participate was a good idea?

Holy, stinkin moley! Are you kidding me? These church leaders all of a sudden received an epiphany about their relevancy in the community? Being relevant is hardly about whether you’ve got the right clothing styles, modern worship band, great equipment, and a nice place to gather. I can tell you that as a parent, if simulating my child’s wardrobe and music mixes makes me relevant than that’s the last thing on my list to do.

The definition of relevant is: “Having a bearing on or connection with the matter at hand.” What specific matters does the church have a good bearing on right now? I’m sure we have a good hold on the “cool” matter. I’m sure we have a good hold on the “big and popular” matter. I’m sure we’ve done a great job connecting the Godly culture with the wordly culture. But what matters should we actually have a bearing on? That’s the relevant question we should be answering.
